The Grand Army of the Republic was an organization of veterans who served in the Civil War. Founded in 1866, they held annual reunions known as “Encampments”. At its peak in 1890 the organization had a national membership of over 400,000 veterans. It was dissolved in 1956 at the death of its last member.
