1. Frederick Douglass Marker
Inscription. Born on Tuckahoe Creek, Talbot County; lived as a slave in St. Michaels area, 1833-1836. Taught self to read and write, conducted clandestine schools for blacks here. Escaped north, became noted abolitionist orator and editor. Returned 1877, as U.S. Marshal for District of Columbia. Also served as D.C. Recorder of Deeds, U.S. Minister to Haiti.
