1. This Memorial Commemorates The Act Of... Marker

Inscription. This Memorial Commemorates the act of Lieutenant Christopher Hussey Of the Montgomery Guards and Private John Latham of the Washington Volunteers, the first volunteer regiment of the State of Georgia. While under fire during the bombardment of April 11,1862, they recovered the Confederate Colors which had been shot down and raised the flag on this parapet.

This photo was taken from the southeast, looking back at the fort. On the corner closet to the camera, the repaired section of the fort is clear, even in this grainy photo, as a different color tone from the surrounding brick. The flag pole in the center of the fort is close to the location the original was posted at the time of the battle.
