The first permanent European settlement in America was established by the Spanish in 1565 at St. Augustine. In 1763 following the French and Indian War (in which Spain sided with France), Britain received Florida but returned it to Spain twenty years later. In 1819, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and organized it as a territory in 1833. Intense wars with the Seminole Indians in the early part of the 19th century ended by 1842, just prior to statehood.
