Abraham Lincoln
1809-1865
President of the United States of America, during the American Civil War, 1861-1865. In the Nation's darkest years, Lincoln led the North in war, issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and oversaw passage of the 13th Amendment, these acts abolished slavery in the United States.
Abolition faced opposition both in the south and among anti-war northerners, but Lincoln saw it as both morally just and strategically necessary. He applied all his political skill to continuing the war effort and ratifying the 13th Amendment.
At his death, the country had only begun the long process of reunifying and ensuring equal rights for all.
