Fort McCoy South Post Gates. . From 1935-1941, the Works Progress Administration made significant contributions to the nation's defense efforts. Within the state of Wisconsin this program provided much-needed Depression-era economic support to the communities in the Monroe County area. The Works Progress Administration constructed the Camp McCoy stone entrance gates along State Highways 16 and 21. Work began in 1940 and was completed in 1941. The road connecting the two highways had existed since Camp McCoy first opened for military training in 1909., The stone gates along Highway 16 cost $4,774 to build. The limestone, sandstone and concrete walls of the gate are set at a 45-degree angle to the main entrance road to Fort McCoy South Post. Each wall of the gate consists of 21 cement-capped limestone pillars, and is approximately 250 feet long., Stone gates were constructed off Highway 21 at the Fort McCoy South Post entrance for a total cost of $760. The two limestone, sandstone and concrete structures each are approximately 31 feet long and 18 feet wide, including the base. The photo shows two guns placed in the Roman archways., The South Post Stone Gates (State Highways 16 and 21) are the only remaining structures on Fort McCoy constructed by the Works Progress Administration.
