In order to have safe passage from the interior of Fort Desperate to its surrounding ditch, troops of the 15th Arkansas dug a tunnel connecting the two points. The men could use this tunnel to enter the outside ditch and fire down into the ravines at approaching Union soldiers. Today the exact location of the tunnel is unknown due to natural erosion of the earthworks.
