During the May 27 assault, this ridge was the site of Union siege Battery No. 6. It was occupied by Battery F, 1st U.S. Artillery Regiment, under command of Captain Richard C. Duryea. Duryea's unit consisted of six 12-pounder Napoleon guns that fired on Confederate cannons located at Fort Desperate and Commissary Hill.
