Location. 34° 56.034′ N, 85° 15.248′ W. Marker is near Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, in Catoosa County. Memorial can be reached from the intersection of Alexander Bridge Road and Battleline Road, on the left when traveling east. This monument is located in the national park that preserves the site of the Chickamauga Battlefield, along the north side of the national park's battlefield tour roadway called Alexander Bridge Road. It cannot be seen from the roadway, being situated a short distance into the woods. According to the location information provided by the National Park Service the, “Monument located within the Chickamauga Battlefield northwest of Alexander Bridge Road near Tour Stop #2, map site #38”. More about this monument. This shell monument dedicated to Peyton H. Colquit indicated the spot where he was mortally wounded. The shell monument was designed by E. E. Betts in 1893. The monument is built using Concrete, Limestone and Iron. The pyramidal shaped monument is 14'10" per side at base and 10' high, the monument consists of a pyramid of cannonballs set in cement & painted black, resting on a triangular molded limestone base. used the "Chickamauga Battlefield" map, that I purchased at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Visitor Center, to determine both the monument number for this marker and the marker's location in relation to the rest of the park's monuments, markers, and tablets. According to the map it provides the, "numerical listing of all monuments, markers, and tablets on the Chickamauga Battlefield (using the Chick-Chatt NMP Monument Numbering System)."
