The hard-fought victory won the Normandy Beaches began the liberation of France and the Low Countries, the defeat of the German Forces and the destruction of Hitler's Third Reich.
After leaving their landing craft, the heavily laden infantrymen struggled through the surf and across the beach under intense German artillery, machine gun, mortar and rifle fire.
