Laufey Jakobsdˇttir, "the grandmother of Grjˇta■orp (Grjˇti Village)"

Grjˇtagata 12 was the home of Laufey Jakobsdˇttir, nicknamed "the grandmother of Grjˇtal■orp," from 1976 to 1995. Laufey was born on 25 September 1915 in Borgarfj÷r­ur, east Iceland. Her husband was Magn˙s B. Finnbogason (1911-93), a master builder, writer and inventor. They had eight children and many descendants. Laufey was passionate about social issues: she was one of the found-ers of the feminist Women's Alliance, and placed priority on women's rights in all that she did. She was an honorary member of the animal protection association, an advocate for elderly care, and was interested in the preservation of historic buildings, an active member of the architectural conservation group Torfusamt÷kin. Laufey wrote many newspaper and magazine articles, as well as a large number of poems. A book based on interviews with her, LÝfsbˇk Laufeyjar (The Book of Laufey's Life), was published in 1992. Laufey always fought for the rights of the disempowered, and she is renowned for her work with

2. Laufey Jakobsdˇttir Marker - Wide View
young people in the city centre, for which she became known as "the grandmother of Grjˇta■orp." Among her achievements was the opening of a public toilet in Grjˇta■orp, where she worked long hours into the nights, unpaid, so that the youngsters would have a safe haven. On 17 June 1996 she was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon. Laufey passed away 6 March 2004.
