Inscription. This high and dry habitat provides food and shelter for many species of animals among the shaded canopy, fallen logs and rich decaying leaf litter. Pine flatwoods depend on prescribed fire to keep the canopy relative open, the understory in check, and the invasion of hardwoods and non-native species to a minimum.
