Buckner's Corps
Major General Simon Bolivar Buckner
September 19, 1863 - 8:00 a.m.
Stewart's Division - - Major General Alexander P. Stewart.
Preston's Division - - Brigadier General William Preston.

At 2 p.m. September 18th, Stewart's Division occupied Thedford's ford and Clayton's Brigade crossed to the west side at dark. Preston's Division occupied Dalton's ford in the afternoon and Gracie's Brigade crossed to the west side at dark. At daylight of the 19th the remaining brigades of both Divisions crossed the river and Preston's Division moving in the direction of Lee and Gordon's Mills formed line of battle near Hunt's and then moved forward to the high ground in the bend of the Chickamauga and formed in column of brigades and thus remained until noon when it moved to the right and occupied the line vacated by Stewart's Division which at that hour was detached and sent to Cheatham's support. At 3 o'clock Trigg's Brigade was sent to support Hood who was hotly engaged in front of Viniard's. Stewart's Division had been formed at an early hour on the right of Preston facing westward with Bushrod R. Johnson's Division on its right.

Erected 1890 by the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Commission. (Marker Number MT-435.)
