Acadian Pioneers

Pubnico is the oldest Acadian village still inhabited by descendants of its founding families. In the phone book you'll see close to 400 listings of d'Entremonts—descendants of Sieur Philippe Mius d'Entremont, who founded Pubnico in 1653.

Acadians were deported from here during the Deportations of 1756 and 1758. They returned 11 years later...and stayed.

This historical village is a testimony to the spirit of the Acadians. It became a reality largely due to the community banding together. Many contributed by donating artifacts, materials, time and money. Buildings were relocated and restored. Local fundraising events were held, including one at which 1000 apple pies were made and sold. This event continues as an annual fundraiser!

So step back in time—and connect to the present. For example, Augustin "My Son" d'Eon's fish shed is really a precursor of the multimillion-dollar fish plants that you see in Pubnico today. Hard work, family pride, resilience, and a gentle sense of humour are all evident here.
