Huntsville in Madison County, Alabama — The American South (East South Central)
Lowell M. Anderson
Father of Monte Sano Club
He proposed this pool to the residents, found the site, raised funds and crews, and put both to work. He trained residents of all ages and professions to operate bulldozers, bend and tie rebar, pour concrete, and plumb a pool. (The deck on the bluff was built by high school kids.) Two years later we were swimming.
Neither Lowell nor wife Laurie could swim and they had no children. What he did, he did for us. Lowell's training as an architect-engineer by Frank Lloyd Wright at the University of Minnesota prepared him for mighty projects all over the world.
After building this pool and test stands at MSFC, he designed and built the shipyard at Pascagoula, Hawaii's reef runway and then a chain of power plants in the West. He marked his 80th birthday atop a giant power plant chimney before returning here to polish his project on the mountain.
