Inscription. This building originally served a large Shaker community in Canterbury, New Hampshire, as a one-story horse and carriage stand. The simple, unadorned commercial structure was expanded in 1850 to provide storage space for brooms made and sold by community members and later, in 1853, to accommodate farming equipment.

Members of the Shaker religious sect were dedicated to self-sufficiency, hard work, communal life and property, simplicity, and perfection. Shaker religious tenets are expressed in the unique architecture, furniture, and handcrafts they produced.

The upper floor of Shaker Shed is currently closed, so we invite you to enjoy a peaceful moment in the ground floor open-air Shaker Shed Lounge.
