1. Grant’s Headquarters Marker

Inscription. When Union forces arrived at Vicksburg, Union General Ulysses S. Grant chose a wood frame house near here as his headquarters. But the house ended up serving a very different purpose. During the night of May 21, 1863, Grant awakened to loud noises outside. His own men were tearing off the sideboards—unaware their commander was sleeping inside. Grant's annoyance turned to approval when he learned their plans: The planks and lumber would bridge a deep trench in front of Stockade Redan during next day's attack. With the house dismantled, Union headquarters was re-established in tents.
