1. Voter Registration Marker
Inscription. Voter registration was one of the goals of the Civil Rights movement. In the South, poll taxes and literacy exams like the one given here at the Lauderdale County Courthouse were used to prevent African-Americans from registering. These practices were outlawed by the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
