Single Pen Slave Cabin

1. Single Pen Slave Cabin Marker

Inscription.
This cabin, and the one across from it, were occupied by slaves on the Welham Plantation in the Antebellum Period.

After the Civil War, they remained occupied by tenant farmers, sharecroppers, and finally plantation workers until the 1960's. These two buildings as well as the double-pen slave cabin were moved to the museum in 1971.

4. Welham Plantation in 1968

The Welham Plantation house was built in 1835, and was located in St. James Parish near Hester, on the River Road (Ga 44). The Marathon Oil Company acquired the property in 1975, and tore down the house in 1979. A house trailer now stands on the site.
