Sacramento property owners often adorned their buildings with cast-iron columns like these to embellish their structures and refine the city's overall appearance. If you look closely, a decorative column may feature information about when and where it was made, as well as space for an address. Can you find clues on the columns that tell you when they were made?

You have returned to Sacramento's original street level. Turn around to see the difference between the city's old and new elevations. The Pioneer Bakery, to your left, was raised on screw jacks to meet the new street level, while the City Market, on this lot, was not. Instead, the owners added a story on top. Could the bricked-in archway on the Pioneer Bakery's side wall have been a connection between the neighboring businesses?
