Inscription. Born in North Carolina in 1793, John Nelson was a veteran of the War of 1812 who moved to Tennessee and married Nancy Edwards of Davidson County in 1824. After her death, he migrated to Mississippi and married Maria Ann Robinson of Tennessee. He moved to Thibodaux in 1845 and acquired Coulon Plantation. His home, Villa Rose, was located across Bayou Lafourche from the center of Thibodaux. A daughter of John Nelson, Catherine, in 1835 married a nephew of Rachel Donelson Jackson, Andrew Jackson Donelson. The couple had 5 children. After her death in 1847, Donelson married Catherine's sister Sarah and joined his father-in-law in partnership as a planter on Coulon. Nelson and Donelson also purchased Acadia Plantation, on which Nicholls State University now is located. Donelson died in 1855, leaving another 5 children sired with Sarah Nelson.
