1. Fort Holmes, 1863 - 1865 Battery Holmes Marker

Inscription. Fort Holmes’s largest earthen battery was built on the southwestern elbow of Bald Head Island to guard Old Inlet for blockade running ships. Its seacoast cannon provided cross-fire with Fort Caswell on Oak Island. Erosion claimed Battery Holmes by 1871. Its site remains underwater about 700 yards to the west.
