More about this marker. 50 years ago, about 24.4 acres along Sherman Avenue were turned over to Warren County by the National Park Service and many monuments were moved to Vicksburg National Park. This one has remained off the park.
Regarding Illinois 40th Infantry.. The monument is located outside of Vicksburg National Military Park on former park property, on the southeast corner of Sherman Avenue and Short Sherman Avenue. This unit was attached to Colonel Stephen G. Hicks 2nd Brigade of Brigadier General William Sooy Smith's 1st Division, Major General Cadwallader C. Washburn's XVI Army Corps (Detachment) and was commanded by Major Hiram W. Hall.
