Das Theater von Assos wurde im 4. Jh. v. Chr. südlich unterhalb der Agora in einen natürlichen Hang hineingebaut. Mit seiner Hufeisenform stellt es ein typisch griechisches Bauwerk dar. Es fasste einst ca. 5000 Besucher, die über tonnengewölbte Eingänge im Westen und Osten sowie Zugänge an beiden Seiten der Bühne die Ränge das Theater betreten konnten. Das Theater wurde außer den beiden Marmorsäulen an der Bühne vollständig aus Andezit, dem örtlichen Stein, errichtet. Das im 4. Jh. v Chr. erbaute Theater wurde bis in die frühbyzantinische Zeit für Spiele genutzt In römischer Zeit (2. Jh. n. Chr.) renovierte man das Bauwerk; dabei wurde die erste Sitzreihe angerissen und Brüstungen angebracht. Nun konnten im Theater auch Gladiatorenkämpfe gezeigt werden. Aus dieser Zeit stammen auch einige Inschriften auf den Sitzbänken mit denen sich damals verschiedene Berufsgruppen, Steinmetze, Schmiede und Gerber ihre Plätze reservierten.
