Inscription.
What?  The ship-side mock-up is a 3m × 3m snapshot replica of the mid-ship section of HMS Victory.

Who?  T. Nielson & Co., traditional wooden ship builders, have constructed the mock-up for the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

When?  Installed in early 2016, the mock-up is monitored each month and continues as a long term research project on the dockside.

Why?   the dockyard’s marine conditions make for a difficult conservation environment. The mock-up is testing the durability and effectiveness of the techniques we intend to use in future conservation work. These include different types of timber planking, fastenings, caulking and paint systems.

Images, clockwise from left: Paint layers applied to timber planking; installing the ship-side mock-up; constructing the mock-up; caulking — sealing the joints in the planking.
