Regarding Captain Juan Chavarria de Valera. The house is locally known as the Casa de la Custodia (House of the Custodia or Monstrance). The Captain Juan Chavarria de Valera is said to have rushed into the burning Saint Augustine Church in 1676 and saved the ancient monstrance. In gratitude the city placed a stone image of a hand holding a monstrance above the Captain's house. It is still there today, although somewhat weathered.
