Inscription.

[English translation]

These stones belonged to the pediment of the Jesuit College. They are marked with the monogram of the order, consisting of the letters IHS which designate Jesus. Delivered to the Jesuits during the demolition of the building in 1877, the stones were offered to the City of Quebec in 1978 to serve as a memorial.

Founded in 1635, the Jesuit College had considerable influence in Quebec and throughout New France. It was an educational institution that offered boys primary and secondary schooling. It was also the mother house from which the missionaries left for the evangelization of the Amerindians.

Only the college of Jesuits offered a complete classics course, modeled on the French model. A hydrography course prepared students for the professions of pilot and surveyor. The college had an impressive library and housed the most important apothecary of the colony.

Archaeological excavations have found remains of the college, its chapel and the adjoining church. Several burials from the places of worship have been uncovered. The many objects collected tell us about various aspects of college life and the use of the building as a military barracks after the [British] Conquest.
