1. Bankhead Highway Marker
Inscription. The Bankhead Highway, established in 1916, was the first all-weather, transcontinental highway in the United States. It spanned some 3,600 miles. In Mississippi, the northern route roughly follows Highway 178 and the southern route, US Highway 278. Only sections of the original road are accessible today.
