Inscription. Before the Civil war, this was the cabinet shop of George Baumann, a young German cabinetmaker. By 1906, it had become the St. Charles Steam Laundry. "Of course a laundry is a washhouse, but when you take into consideration the fact that the St. Charles Steam Laundry uses only distilled purified water to wash your clothes, without cost to the people, but with much credit, you will instantly realize that this is no ordinary undertaking." In the 20th century, the building was a barbershop for seventy consecutive years.
