The Granaries
In front of you are the remains of two large granaries. They were designed to store grain to make bread, an important part of a Roman soldier's diet.
Inside the buildings the stone floors rest on low stone walls with channels between them. The channels are connected to vents in the outer wall which allowed air to circulate under the floor and prevented the grain becoming mouldy.
The construction of the granaries was started around AD 180. It is thought that it was interrupted almost immediately by invasion of hostile tribes, and not completed until sometime in the third century.
The pillars once supported a portico (porch) which sheltered the loading area at the entrances to the granaries. Only the loading platform for the eastern granary survives.
