The East Military Compound
You are now standing in the east military compound, some of which lies buried in the field behind you. The most substantial remains within the compound belong to a pair of residential houses to your left, in the north-west corner. Possibly they were for the officers in charge of the legionary garrison. Other buildings may have been workshops and barracks. It is possible that the small building which faces the main gate of the compound was a headquarters building. The two small buildings behind this could have been meeting rooms (scholae) for the social and welfare clubs (collegia) of lower-ranking soldiers.
