3. Postcard of related Confederate Navy Yard Marker
"Postcard promoting the site of Confederate States Navy Yard, which operated from 1862 to 1865, in Charlotte, NC.... The marker or tablet was placed by the Stonewall Jackson Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and was unveiled on June 3, 1910, Jefferson Davis' birthday. The iron shield is surrounded by sea cables and mounted on anchors. It represents the years when the Gosport Naval Yard in Norfolk, Virginia was in danger of capture by Union soldiers, so another location that would be safer was chosen in Charlotte. Wrought-iron projectiles, torpedoes and propeller shaftings for Confederate gun boats were made there. The site is in the 200 block on the south side of East Trade Street at the railroad underpass."
