Potter County, South Dakota Civil War Memorial
to pay tribute to those Veterans who settled
Potter County. Potter County was initially named
Ashmore, but later named Potter by the 1877
Dakota Territory Legislature. Gettysburg was
first named Meade, in honor of General Meade,
and Later named Gettysburg to memorialize
the Pennsylvania town where the civil War
Battle, often considered the turning point of
the Civil War. Was fought on July 1st to 4th, 1863
. President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg address,
followed by his 2nd inaugural address, gave the
name Gettysburg great historical significance
and a name known by all. It symbolizes a
transition from the ashes by which Lincoln
forged a union of the United States.
