Famous pioneer aeronaut
of America, who was born
in Lancaster in 1808 and
lived most of his life
near this spot.
Beginning in 1835 he
completed, from many towns,
462 balloon ascensions
during his lifetime.
John Wise lies in Lake
Michigan where his
balloon fell after an
ascent from St. Louis
September 29, 1879.
