1. Major Bennett's Lunette Marker
Inscription.
"Another (solid shot) struck a tree about thirty feet from the ground, cutting it completely off at a point eight inches in diameter the top as it fell killing one horse and crushing a caisson of the First Maine Battery, a little in front of the line."
--First Lieutenant Henry A. Willis
Adjutant, 53rd Massachusetts Infantry

During the summer of 1863, this quiet ridgeline buzzed with deadly musket-fired miniθ balls and the shrieking and exploding sounds of Yankee and Rebel cannon fire during the Port Hudson military campaign of Union General Nathaniel P. Banks' Nineteenth Army Corps and Confederate General Franklin K. Gardner's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana Port Hudson garrison.

Here within these small earthwork fortresses, during the 48-day siege, Lieutenant Asa W. Harman commanded a detachment of Company A artillerymen from the 1st Alabama Infantry at this lunette. These gun toting riflemen crewed a 24-pound 5.82 inch rifled gun. Lieutenant Harman's well-aimed shots and shells troubled the Union infantry and artillerymen facing this position and also disabled two of the 1st U.S. Artillery's guns in quick succession.
