Logwood Scale
This scale was located at Pantrepant in the Parish of Trelawny. It was used to weigh logwood, which was utilized extensively as a dyestuff from the 16th century, and was among Jamaica’s prime exports from that time until the 1920’s. Logwood dye gives a beautiful black on wool, nylon, silk and rayon. Enhancement of the colour value of the wood depends on oxidation and there was a time when pre-treatment for that purpose was achieved by frequent urination on stacks of chips over periods of up to a few months.
