Lakeland in Polk County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
‘Mute Swan Protecting Her Cygnets’
by Ian G. Brennan 2012
‘Most noble Order of the Garter” and
“Most Honourable Order of the Bath’,
has been a contemporary sculptor and
woodcarver to the British Royal
Household since 1989.
‘Mute Swan protecting her Cygnets”
is an original master sculpture
carved from a single English Lime
wood log in 1992. The original
carving is 27” tall and 34” wide and
was enlarged to achieve the
commissioned 8’ tall bronze
‘Mute Swan protecting her Cygnets’
for the City of Lakeland.
Historically swans have graced the
City of Lakeland’s lakes. In the early
1950’s, a swan epidemic eliminated
the colony in Lakeland.
Through the generosity of a local
family, the Queen of England gifted a
pair of Mute Swans from the Royal
flock to the City. Two English white
mute swans were released on Lake
Morton February 9, 1957.
The descendent swan population
remains a treasure of the
community today.
Erected by City of Lakeland.
