1. Almy Hall Marker

Inscription. Thomas C. Almy (1787-1813) was born in Rhode Island. A Quaker, Almy began his naval career as a young boy. Showing much skill and promise he received his first command at age 21. During the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813, Sailing Master Almy commanded the schooner Somers. He skillfully maneuvered his ship to engage the smaller vessels in the British fleet. After the battle he remained in Erie where he contracted pneumonia, succumbing to the infection in December 1813. For his actions at the Battle of Lake Erie he was posthumously awarded a commemorative engraved sword, which was presented to his family.
