Inscription. John Joliffe Yarnall (1786-1815) was born in Wheeling, West Virginia. Enlisting as a midshipman in the US Navy in 1809, he performed blockade duties during the Napoleonic Wars before being assigned as a first lieutenant on Commodore Perry's flagship Lawrence during the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813. Though wounded during the battle, he refused to leave his post. When Perry transferred his command to the Niagara, Yarnall assumed command of the battered Lawrence. He was later wounded a second time during the Second Barbary Wars. On the return voyage home his ship the Epervier was lost at sea with all hands on July 14, 1815.
