Inscription. Built in 1807 near Amherstburg in Upper Canada, the Caledonia was a British naval vessel prior to her capture in 1812 by a boarding party led by American naval officer Jesse D. Elliott. The Caledonia had a crew of 53 men and was armed with two 24-pounders and one 32-pounder. She was commanded by Lieutenant Daniel Turner during the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813. At one point only Caledonia's long guns could engage the British fleet as they pounded the Lawrence. After the war the ship was sold and renamed the General Wayne. The ship reportedly sank in the 1830s in Lake Erie.
