Inscription.
Mary Cable, also, School No. 4 Site. . From 1867 to 1980 public elementary School 4 occupied this site, providing education for neighborhood children. Starting in 1922, with school segregation, School 4 served African American children. African American educator and reformer Mary E. Cable (1862-1944) served as School 4's principal from 1922 to 1933. In 1953 a new School 4 building replaced the older one, and the new building was named after Cable. With the displacement of the residential neighborhood by IUPUI, the Indianapolis Public Schools closed the school in 1980. IUPUI then leased and eventually purchased the building to house several university programs until the university razed it in 2006.
