The plaque mounted to the gun reads, "Civil War Trophy Gun. 30 Pdr. Parrot Rifle from U.S.S. Hartford presented to the Village of Freeport by the United States Navy Department. Mounted July 4, 1902."

Manufactured at the West Point Foundry in New York, a total of 391 of these were accepted by the US Army by the time production ceased in 1866.
