1. Muskingum River Navigation System Marker
Inscription. The Muskingum River Improvement, started in 1837, played a key role in economic development of the Greater Ohio River Valley as one of the nation's first complete slackwater navigation systems for steam-powered vessels, and survives as the most intact system of large hand-operated locks in the United States.
