1. Texaco Marker
Inscription.

Texaco was formed at Spindletop in 1901 by Joseph Cullinan and Arnold Schlaet as the Texas Fuel Company.

Cullinan served as president and general manager of Texaco.

Joseph Cullinan was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania and lived part of his early life in Shamburg, near Pleasantville, 8 miles from Titusville. Cullinan began working in the local Titusville oilfields at age fourteen and learned to perform almost every task associated with oil production. Cullinan was hired by Standard Oil National Transit Company in 1882.

Cullinan left Standard Oil in 1895 to organize his own company, Petroleum Iron Works in New Castle, PA; an operation that manufactured steel storage tanks.

When oil was discovered in Corsicana, Texas, in 1894, local developers invited Cullinan to advise them on production and marketing techniques, which lead to his involvement in the Spindletop oil field and subsequently the founding of Texaco.

For many years, Texaco was the only truly national brand selling in all fifty states under one name. It featured some of the most famous higher octane gasolines including Texaco Fire Chief and Texaco Sky Chief.

In 2001, Texaco was bought by Texaco by Chevron.
