Wolf's Head Oils and Lubes
In 1879, A.L. Confer constructed a refining still 18 miles from here in Reno, PA called the Empire Oil Works.
He recognized a need for a better illuminating oil and used carefully controlled temperatures to create a high-quality kerosene. In 1911, C.H. Ellingwood organized Wolverine Lubricants Company of New York and merged with Empire in 1928 to become Wolverine-Empire Refining Company. They specialized in aviation oil and were direct suppliers to Pan-American Airways.
In 1940, the company became Wolf's Head and supplied WWII flying fortresses and B-29s. Staying local for many years, Wolf's Head was bought by Pennzoil in 1963 and is now owned by Shell.
