At the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, the 17th Infantry was attached to Colonel Allen Thomas' Provisional Brigade, of Brigadier General Stephen D. Lee's Provisional Division, and commanded by Colonel Robert Richardson. Afterwards, the regiment was assigned to Brigadier General William E.
