Birthplace of "Wyoming". . c. 1854, retail merchant Robert Reily built this home, Twin Oaks, on a large lot that that included orchards, vineyards, and a stable. Here Reilly and his family enjoyed what was then the country life., In early April, 1861, Reily invited neighbors to his home, in his words, “for the purpose of giving a name to our embryo village.” Wives were invited, too, and asked to participate. After careful deliberation, a vote resulted in a tie between Wyoming and Hebron. Reily, who had not voted, broke the tie by selecting the name “Wyoming.”, One week later, the Civil War began, Reily joined the 75th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Eventually promoted to the rank of colonel, he was wounded in the battle of Chancellorsville in 1863 and died several days later. His wife and family moved to Colorado after the war ended., In ensuing years, the turret and Victorian features were added, and most of the land was sold off in parcels. Today, the home is recognized as the “Birthplace of Wyoming” for Robert Reily’s contribution to its name. . This historical marker was erected in 2017 by Wyoming Historical Society, the Ramstetter family. It is in Wyoming in Hamilton County Ohio
