Awarded the VC for his action on 31 July
1945 when, as HM Submarine XE3 diver
with total disregard for his own safety &
despite faulty breathing apparatus,
successfully attached limpet mines to
the heavily fouled hull of the Japanese
cruiser Takao. Returning exhausted
he again exited the submarine
to clear a jammed limpet
mine carrier.
