In 1660 Medad Pomeroy accepted tools, an anvil shaped like this replica, and land in exchange for opening a blacksmith shop in Northampton, Massachusetts. That anvil was passed through many generations of Pomeroy blacksmiths becoming a symbol of the family.
Medad Pomeroy's 2nd great grandson, Lemuel Pomeroy, a blacksmith and gunsmith by trade from Pittsfield, MA, established the Copake Iron Works in 1845 along with four of his sons. Attracted by abundant natural resources, they constructed a blast furnace and erected necessary structures for iron production. Lemuel Pomeroy died in 1849.
After the death of Lemuel Pomeroy, Jr. in 1853, the remaining partners continued the business until 1861 when it was sold. Several generations of the Pomeroy family continued to live in Copake Falls, in what is now Taconic State Park, until the early 20th century
