1. Jolly Boat Marker
Inscription. A jolly boat is a general purpose ship's boat usually carried about deck or on stern davits. This example was formerly carried by the 75-foot gasoline launch Chicago, built in 1916 by the St. Louis Boat Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Chicago was designed as a survey vessel for the Engineer Corps, U.S. Army, for use in the Chicago district. Around 1934, Chicago was sold and converted to a yacht for David P. Allen of Washington, D.C. A few years later, he sold the yacht and moved to Lusby, Maryland, taking the jolly boat with him. The Chicago sank at Alexandria, Virginia, in 1974.
